1927 Cockburn: perfect pale brick red, lightly fading to brown at the edge. Light on the nose, with a hint of alcohol. DRT said “musty†. Much heat mid-palate, leading to a long weak-marmalade finish. Nice enough, but I’d been spoiled by the ’08 and ’12.

JDAW says I said "musty" but for some reason I elaborated when I noted "slight mustyness". In the mouth I noted "thick, hot with mint on the end."

Deep red in colour, slightly harsh smelling but in a fruity way - think of sour cherries. Very neutral entry, but with lots of red licorice and Bassets All Sorts. Lots of aeration in the mouth releases heat and a spicy white pepper. With continued work, this port opens up and becomes more fruity. Fairly short length. Disappointing for the vintage's reputation. 88/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Generic Information
Also generically declared (declared by all the top houses). It was our biggest declaration ever (30,000 cases!). Shipped to the UK in '29, coincided with the Great Depression, and the London merchants had some difficulty in selling it; some might have been used in normal port blends.

Year/Viticulture
It was a big crop and a late harvest, which might mean that the weather during the vegetative cycle had been cool. But the grapes were ripe and the lagares stood a good deal of work (E Cockburn 1950)

Tasting Notes
Considered one of the best of the century was always described as a great vintage but not with much body. It is now a delicate vintage but still retaining liquorice-like intensity of a really old fine Vintage Port.

Other
It's a sexy elegant wine with silky tannins.

Very fruity and complex, with syrupy caramel and fennel flavours and a citrus and walnut skin finish. Silky and on the delicate side. (L. Murphy)
