What I ment with writing a questionmark after synonyms, was to clarify if synonyms of the words in the puzzle was the way to go. I did not in any way think that the word synonyms was the answer.

I realised that probably wasn't intended as the answer, but was hedging slightly on how much clue to give, hence my reply was intended to be mildly cryptic (apologies if it came over pedantic/annoying). More clearly since you've asked directly: yes, synonyms will help you solve the puzzle.

I sat and smiled when I wrote the reply, so no offence taken. It just goes to show how different a sentence can "sound" when it is written and not spoken directly to a person. Maybe "smilies" do have a function?

Then I think it may have something to do with your feelings about maybe turning 50?

No, I can't see any connection there.

The answer, once the question is understood, is a straightforward one-word answer.

It has been a while, hasn't it. Ok, big hint; you were very much on the right track with synonyms; also consider how the words sound.

Perhaps people find word puzzles less interesting; perhaps this is a poor puzzle. A last set of clues to encourage; answer after the weekend if not solved by then.
- Consider each word, and possible synonyms
- Consider each word, and possible homonyms
- Consider homonyms of synonyms
- The first word is trickier than the rest, ignore it and work on the others
- This should provide a sentence which is a question with a one word answer

Not quite figured out the whole question I don't think, but:

? term can you (ewe) read (reed) ? ways (weighs) round.

The first word I am guessing is Which (witch). Phil must be a Buffy fan!

And the second question mark could be both maybe.

So: Which term can you (ewe) read (reed) both ways (weighs) round?

Nicely done Mike :D

In full:
Start: Willow words tin sheep stalk either evaluate hoop?
Synonyms: (Witch) words (can) (ewe) (reed) either (weigh) round? (with a slight cheat on the Synonym for the first word)!
Homonyms: (Which) words can (you) (read) either (way) round?
Answer: Palindromes

Mike's question next.

I am staring out of my study window into the garden, which is very colourful at this time of year thanks to the flowers of two different types of bush. Name the bushes.

A small clue for one of the bushes. Although technically it is not a tree, most people refer to it as a tree.

What is the vintage of the oldest bottle of unfortified wine I currently have in my wine collection?
