We’ve never properly tasted the wines of Poças, a house best known for its wood-aged Ports, but which also makes VP and LBV. I have tasted too few of all categories.

It is envisaged — so not a firm plan — that we will start with a flight of wood-aged, tawnies or colheitas or both. Then with and after food we will concentrate on the bottle-aged, VPs and LBVs.

Likely as not, many of the bottles will come from or via Tony C. of Vintage Wine & Port, for which thanks. But others with gems are encouraged to reveal them here.

Yes please, I rather like the wines I've tried of theirs.

<edit> I have the 1997 Colheita that George found underwhelming during yesterday's virtual gathering, as well as the 2017 VP.

@ rich_n I was drinking the 2000 Colheita yesterday, not the 1997 Colheita. It was indeed underwhelming.

I have the 1964 Colheita and the 2011 VP which I could offer up for this tasting. I have higher hopes of both.

The 1964 Poças Colheita is one of the best of the vintage. I think I slightly prefer the 1964 Noval Colheita, but I can't think of any others that I'd rate over the Poças. It's a great Colheita from a pretty mediocre (at best) year.

You are indeed correct, I was drinking the '97 but I shall blame lockdown-brain for not being able to remember that detail.

Julian, this means I have the 2000 Colheita, not the '97.

Hopefully not too late but yes please! I have the 64 colheita (which I agree with Glenn is great and knocked the Taylor 64 into a cocked hat when last tasted side by side-when Glenn was present I think). Also have the 77, 85 and 2000 VPs.

Idle perusal of vintageport.se tells me this was a business founded by Manoel D. Poças Junior in 1918 (that explains the '100 years' cork on the 2000 colheita botled in 2018, I was wondering) and now called Manoel D. Poças Junior Vinhos SA. I infer that Poças Junior and Poças are the same wine, the Junior possibly having been dropped as unhelpful in English-speaking markets as suggesting second-tier status.

I will liaise with Joao and see if we can source some older VP bottles or fill the gap in the colhietas between 60's and 90's

I have
Colheita - 64, 67, 96, 97, 00, 01, 03...
VP 77, 78, 96, 03...

We do need to taste the Quinado

Also they have a 2006 colheita aged in barrel (small cask) and one aged in a “balseiro” (big cask).

Thank you. Added to the second post. So far we have nine colheitas, ten VPs, zero LBVs, and might be able to obtain one Quinado.

From the VPID images, I see all vintages branded as "Pocas Junior" up to 1978, and from 1982 the labels all show the brand as "Pocas" (still Pocas Junior as the producer in smaller script).

Let’s guess that we will have access to the Ports we have, plus those for which the website has data sheets. That would be 10 × colheita + 4 × tawny with indication of age + 12 × VP + 4 × LBV.

Perhaps I’m older than formerly, but thirty in one session starts to be non-trivial consumption.

Tawnies and colheitas remain good in bottle for a while. So what about a 16:30 start, with small pours of the wood-aged, not necessarily finishing them. Then the evening session can be the 16 bottled-aged, VPs + LBVs.

Might this be a good plan?

This is starting to look like two tastings, perhaps one of tawny and VP, perhaps the other of LBV and colheita?

I can confirm that Poças Junior and Poças wines come from the same producer. Poças is simply the modern choice of brand; Poças Junior having been retired a few years ago.
