TPF emoticons: your suggestions here

Post by jdaw1 »

TPF needs some special emoticons. Not “pointlessly flashy epileptic-unfriendly emoticons with a target audience of illiterate teenagers†: I mean useful TPF-relevant emoticons.

Some examples:
  • Image Niepoort 1977, tasting measure;
    Image Niepoort 1977, drinking measure;
    Image Taylor 1994, drinking measure;
    Image Dow 1977, drinking measure.
My thinking is that each colour would come in two versions: “tasting† and “drinking†. This also affords a splendid opportunity for bickering over colours, and their names. (I am unsatisfied with the colours of the examples made: more work needed. But you get the idea.)

I agree that this would be good provided the work on inadequate colours does not impact available resources on other ongoing projects.

Derek

PS: To those who have never worked in an IT development environment -- what you are seeing here is a classic case of a developer becoming bored with (or stuck on) the piece of work he has been commissioned to do and choosing to create something that looks pretty just to fill his time. I am surprised that Developer Jdaw has shown his work in this way as it normally surfaces during a conversation like this:

Project Manager: Have you finished building the influctulation code for the Flux Capacitor yet?

Developer: Erm, no, someone else asked me to do something really important

Project Manager: But I told you that the Flux Capacitor had to be ready by today otherwise our company will go bust and you and I will lose our jobs!! What was more important than that?

Developer: Have you seen these little port glasses I've made? They're really cool and they move around the screen when you hit Control-P

Oh how dreadful! Boring. Anal. If I had Administrator rights I would just arbitarily delete them. Will chase ordinary people away in droves. Surely only relevant to overly-literate geeks!!!

Alan,

Be fair. Julian is patently in a traumatic state and needs a release. He has managed this by creating a set of icons that please his currently angst-ridden mind. We should be looking after him not criticising him.

Julian,

They are lovely, could you do one for Warre 1980 please?

Sorry, Conky, I’ve failed to understand. All three posts made me laugh.

Actually, could we have one for each of the 1980s that we will be drinking on May 20? I could always print the tasting mats in colour and these would look luv-erly.

(Was that tender and supportive enough, Alex?)

Glass emoticons

Post by jdaw1 »

Thank you for your enthusiastic comments. Upon reflection I agree: the tasting portions have too few pixels for the colours to be seen. So, below, find a proposed set of 39 new emoticons, needing only names. We could use the tedious colour codes, or appropriate refreshments. Suggest away!

Emoticon: “QuotePedant†

Post by jdaw1 »

OK, I have a set of (now 40) glasses. As soon as I manage to make a .pak file, they will be sent to the creator’s assistant for uploading (I can’t do that myself).

There is an extra icon, which should not be uploaded without suitable permission, that I propose naming “QuotePedant†: Image. I shan’t be using it, but perhaps others would wish to!

And, of course, other TPFers with icons are more than welcome to suggest them (though supreme management has the final say).

Without wanting to criticise this great work, can I ask what emotion FF6633 is intended to convey?

There are only so many emotions a man can cope with. Normally about 3.

The plan is that a TN writer can say “it was <this> colour†. That requires several colours. And the FF6633 isn’t far off the Borges 1963 we had at the TCP on Wed 30 Jan (though the colour was actually nearer FF9900).

That is fine. Colours are not emotions. I can cope with lots of colours.

I was intrigued by the exclamation mark at the end of the sentence, which I thought should be a question mark.

Is it intended that this would be used by mere mortals to point out to any overly-pedantic members that they were displaying the worst aspects of their personality?

OK, so Image now has a pendant, Image. I don’t like the pendant: it’s too crowded.

Emoticon :tpf: added. I think correct form is for :tpf: to be a link, as done here.

FWLIW, I did suggest to a another site’s webmaster that it might want a favicon of Image but no feedback was received, and it doesn’t seem to have been used. We could use it as an emoticon, though. Maybe.

I was being mildly rebellious rather than ignorant when I put it in with no trailing colon. I knew there was a reason to make Julian an admin and that was to have an auto-correct facility.

I vote we add the FTLOP as a link to our forum's emoticons. That way, when we want to refer over to FTLOP, we can just drop in the emoticon.

Oops. They should (a) probably have gone into meaningless drivel and (b) should not have been a single word which has forced the screen to get wider.

Original post now amended to aid formatting, but please read the first emoticon as though it was all on one line.

I like them all, but I think the dice-thrower may be used at inappropriate times and could cause unnecessary escalation of minor disputes.

I am particularly fond of the Guinness Glugger. It will be very usefull when I am in Dublin.

It is not that we did not want to use that emoticon, it was that Stewart was up to his eyeballs with development of the new website. However, maybe now he'd find time to use it.

Thanks Julian.

For the favicon use the .ico that I emailled you, not a derivative of the :ftlop: .gif that is now hosted here at :tpf:, but do add the :ftlop: .gif as an emoticon.

Apart from the first emoticon of you and me suddenly realising that there's still a bottle of Vesuvio '94 left, I vote NO
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Far too active to drink your port without spilling it! How about this as a better activity:
