UB = Under Bond (sometimes termed as IB - In Bond). This means that no tax or duty has been paid on the wines at the point of entry into the UK and they must be stored in a Bonded Warehouse until sold with duty and VAT applied. It is possible to buy wine UB and leave it in a bonded warehouse and not pay the duty and tax until you want to take delivery. This is a particularly attractive option for young wines as you can buy them at the tax free price, keep them for 20 or 30 years and then only pay tax on the original purchase price.

DP = Duty Paid. Once the duty (which is about £2 per bottle for fortified wines) has been paid it is not possible to purchase the wines from a retailer without paying VAT at the point of sale.

how about if I, in the US, buy the wines.

Do I have to pay the taxes?

In-bond wines can be exported, without payment of UK taxes.

In-bond wines can be exported, without payment of UK taxes. The US will doubtless impose its own, but not the UK.

Tesco are running their "Buy 6 bottles and get 25% off" sale at the moment, port is included in the sale.

Sainsbury are discounting the Croft Pink Port as their contribution to the price war - currently £7.50.
Top Ports in 2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!

Happily, provided you pay me in advance and give me a note to say "It's not for me, it's for my weird friend. He's Californian, you know."

Do you want it stored in offsite storage for the next 10 years so that you can be the only person in the entire world to own Croft Bottle Aged Traditional Pink Port.

I really wonder what it would be like...but not enough to find out!

Get them relabeled first with a date, and sell them in 25 years as a previously-unknown Pink Colheita :)

I've not tried the Smith Woodhouse '97, but at that price and with the reputation that they have and my experience of their other vintages, I was more than happy to risk £10 per bottle.

Where on their website did you see that they have 800+ cases?

I’d posted one at :ftlop: which is now in the TN Forum. It’s pleasant enough, though not great, and certainly worth getting at that price.

Gotcha. When you look at the "in bond" prices, the website tells you how many cases are available.

Thanks.

Just so that people understand how good this SW97 deal is the current http://www.wine-searcher.com low price in the UK is £200 IB, the lowest in the US is £275 before tax is added.

http://www.portlover.com give this wine 90 points.

Buy it.

Derek

PS: The Berry's price is not showing on wine-searcher - interesting!

Incidentally, their out-of-bond numbers includes both bottles in their cellars at St. James’s and at their out-of-town warehouse. (I’d assumed it was the just the former). This makes it worth calling ahead if you are planning a visit to pick up something in person.

The prices were only released today, so it could be a delay in the Wine Searcher webcrawlers picking up the price.

Or it could be the fact that Berry's have several prices and the crawlers only pick up the first (undiscounted) price.

Or it could be some other reason.

Or it could be some other reason.
But Berry's aren't showing up on the list at all, which suggests that this is a new shipment that has only hit the market today? If so, good spot AHB

It does confuse me slightly why BBR would end up with such a large shipment of port at this price. Surely this is Tesco or M&S territory for Christmas 2008?

It’s now “Buy 6 and save £44.40 (23.5%)† (about £23 a bottle). Serves me right for not ordering on the immediately (I was planning on going over the West End today so could have picked up a half-case in person).

I’ll be interested to hear if they fulfil the orders that you made last night as the price appears to have been a mistake…

I was too slow

I was too slow, as Jackie at BBR just told me—by phone—that the In-Bond price is £217 per case. Shame: I was going to take several cases.

Lay & Wheeler in the UK are advertising Vesuvio 2006 @ 183/6 in bond

Don't recall having seen 2006's and given the heat in London today buying port was far from my mind.
