One quiz at a time
Re: One quiz at a time
I suppose I should actually make a guess, so I'll try 1 Ceres, chosen because she is the Roman goddess of agriculture?

I think that clue leads to a list of candidates from which there is one obvious exemplary candidate.jdaw1 wrote:Those placemats: www.jdawiseman.com/2014/20140405_star_party.pdf.jdaw1 wrote:A clue. The question was inspired by the placemats made for tasting DRT was meant to be having last weekend.

Is it #6 Hebe? Partly because that's the noise you make when you're hiccuping after too much to drink and partly because Hebe's symbol is that of a cup?

Re: One quiz at a time
Very well. Tomorrow I fly to South Africa, arriving on Sunday morning. After a day's work I will be going out for dinner and will have a bottle of locally (as in, from within the country) produced fortified red wine made by Douro Port-makers from traditional nothern Portuguese grape varieties, partially fermented before being fortified with neutral grape spirit and bottled within 2 years of the vintage.
Others might say port in place of three lines of verbiage, but on this forum I am sure that would be discouraged.
My question is, which producer is the one I have chosen to drink first at dinner on Sunday? I will give clues either to the venue (which allows you to look at their wine list) or to the producer.

To the best of my knowledge, they don't make port. They do make their signature sweet white wine (which is very good) and what is probably the best single varietal Semillion that I have ever drunk.PopulusTremula wrote:Knowing nothing about how its made or by whom; Klein Constantia.

Bredell is a good guess as I have a soft spot for their fabulous ports, which to my taste are the best produced in South Africa. Sadly neither Bredell nor Allesverloren ports are on the wine list, though I may well buy a couple of bottles of Allesverloren table wine from the restaurant shop to bring home.

de Kraans is spot on. I'm heading for the Butcher Shop and Grill in Sandton. De Kraans Cape Vintage is on the list and will be what I drink to wash down my meat of choice.

Re: One quiz at a time
As we all know, the shipping of Port was critical to its growth as a beverage in the 1700s and 1800s. As such, can any of you name the 5 boroughs that ranked in the top ten for population in England and Wales in 1851, that also were major ports.
Now, I would classify them all as cities, but as I'm a few thousand miles away, so I used the term boroughs verbatim from the source to avoid possible confusion from differing understandings of the terms.

If you faithfully promise that you are not getting us into hot water with our Scottish bretheren by including Scottish ports in the list, I will guess London, Liverpool, Bristol, Swansea and Hull.

Also, the final port is clearly outside of the borders of Scotland, so I think I'm safe

The borough's name was adopted from its centerpiece at the time: its wooden castle, established in 1080.
