1977 Berry Brothers

Post by winesecretary »

1977 Berry Brothers (Quarles Harris)
The characteristic note of star anise on the nose.

Full rich port which despite the long decant took an hour to unfurl in glass.

A very youthful bottle to which I gave a point.

Consumed 2/2/22

Quarles Harris. Deep mature red colour, 40% opaque. Sweet, albeit faint, jammy red fruit on the nose. Lightweight entry but a lovely mid-palate with strawberry jam and - surprisingly - some charcoal tannins still providing a little grip giving a palate which shows some youth and vigour despite its age. Very lively aftertaste and a long finish. This is impressive; youthful but with plenty of maturity. 88/100. Tasted 02-Feb-22. Decanted 11 hours.
Top Ports in 2022: Quinta do Noval Nacional 1931. I have never drunk such a wonderful bottle of Port. I cried with joy.

2023: Fonseca 1966. There are not many better Ports, except a good bottle of Fonseca 1927. Wow!
