NV Sandeman Ruby 3*

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Sandeman 3* Ruby Port, believed to have been bottled before 1932 when the Don logo started to be used on the bottles. Slightly cloudy, a very pale brown - almost the colour of butterscotch. A maderised nose, showing caramelised sugar and black treacle. A much more pleasant palate than nose, showing oranges and marmalade and with a quince bitterness. Lively acidity keeps the wine together. A pleasant and lingering aftertaste, full of bitter oranges and of a very good length. Faded and elderly - and surprisingly drinkable. The nose did improve in the glass over a couple of hours. 83/100. Drunk 26 June 2009.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

≤1932 Sandeman Ruby: horrible to behold. Cloudy brown-orange. Nosing of Madeira, oranges, sugar (AHB rightly said ‟butterscotch”). Not unpleasant”šnot much at all. To taste light. Lots of heat, gaining strength with time. Reminded me of Bg63. Actually very long and very drinkable.
