On Thursday 11th December a few of us gathered together at the White Horse in Newport, Essex to open some bottles with no labels and few clues as to their identity. There were also some oddities opened alongside them. Many bottles cold be identified from their branded corks, but a large minority had no branding or illegible branding.

Sandeman 1852, with a label saying this was shipped from Portugal in 1863 and bottled in London by Richard Coverly in 1886. Decanted 7 hours, separated from a fine sediment which would make the wine very cloudy if left in situ. Pale ginger colour with a slight green rim. Attractive nose of preserved ginger. Dry in style on the palate with a gentle acidity keeping the grapefruit and ginger alive. A little heat on the aftertaste before a long fresh ginger root finish. Just delicious! 92/100. Decanted 7 hours.
