It was a hard night at my first job on Wall St, but it turned out to be a very memorable night too. A good friend was going to london to work permanently so we went out in style. It was the night I had my first bottle of port, Fonseca 1983.

Matter of fact, they still have it in their cellars. Where was I?

From conversation over at tonight’s tasting, I know that this is correct. So here is a foretelling of the next question. When printing the placemats for the splendid 18th-April New-York tasting, a small error was observed. The error was too small, or I too lazy, for it to be repaired. So it stayed. What was the error on the placemats?

You have 12 tick boxes in the bottom right hand corner but only 11 bottles

Alex K: wrong, the check boxes are for water, not bottles of port. Water check boxes were fine.

There is an extra placemat with the name "Alex" in the footer. This could either be an error in including a name from an ealier use of the same code or should have been "AHB" so that he could have used it for his Fonseca 1966.

Google quickly narrowed it down to two possibilities.

What port am I drinking now? Classic house neither Symington nor Taylor-Fladgate, classic year for many names, though not one showing this house at its best.

Strangely, I have never seen that particular definition used before but I can see where you are coming from. Perhaps another way to define it would be "Houses purchased by Mr Wiseman Senior or to be found within a 10 mile radius of Cambridge University".

I think the real answer is yes, it is a classic house, being one of the oldest, largest and most famous houses in all of Portingdom. They just aren't up there with the big boys when it comes to VP which is probably why they flew below the Wiseman radar for so long.

Classic, perhaps yes, but not classic. Old age doesn’t make one classic that requires being tasted in one’s youth!
