Re: 1983 Cockburn
1983 Cockburn: pure port red, no brown, no blue. Nose: TCA? Heat mid-palate, with lovely cherry fruit into a long length. TCA did not spoil taste for me.
MC-R said that 20% of C83s are TCA tainted.

Re: 1983 Cockburn
Dark red. I noted "slight VA". I did not detect any TCA. In the mouth I noted "lovely - smooth, balanced with a long finish".
This got my vote as 3rd best of the afternoon flight.

Re: 1983 Cockburn
Light in colour, clear and pale centre. Nose showing some signs of maturity with the typical attractive mace and all spice over sweet redcurrant that is typical of a mature Cockburn. Elegant and restrained in the mouth, redcurrant around an attractive spiciness. Subdued tannins and pleasing acidty. Good, spicy aftertaste, which is of good length although not too long. Miguel Corte-Real suggested this was very slightly TCA tainted so as to flatten the wine just a shade. 91/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Re: 1983 Cockburn
Miguel Côrte-Real sent AHB some of his own notes on the various vintages, some obviously drafted in advance, some from the day itself.

Generic Information
Declared by 11 of the top 14 houses (Croft, Martinez and Noval did not).
Year/Viticulture
Quite a long and cold dry winter with some very low temperatures even in May. The vintage started one or two weeks late. During the harvest the weather was fine.
Tasting Notes
Powerful muscular wines with lots of tannins. Decanter Magazine considered Cockburn's the best of the year. Again, Bruce Guimaraens had the same opinion.
Other
Cockburn's is showing some variability from bottle to bottle.
Last minute notes
Great, spicy, raisin. Looks like that it was kept in a pine tree wood barrel.
MC-R notes
Some TCA but very good. 8/10
